چکیده

The arsenic concentrations in 297 coal samples were collected from the main coal-mines of 26 provinces in China were determined by molybdenum blue coloration method. These samples were collected from coals that vary widely in coal rank and coal-forming periods from the five main coal-bearing regions in China. Arsenic content in Chinese coals range between 0.24 to 71 mg/kg. The mean of the concentration of Arsenic is 6.4+/-0.5 mg/kg and the geometric mean is 4.0+/-8.5 mg/kg. The level of arsenic in China is higher in northeastern and southern provinces, but lower in northwestern provinces. The relationship between arsenic content and coal-forming period, coal rank is studied. It was observed that the arsenic contents decreases with coal rank in the order: Tertiary>Early Jurassic>Late Triassic>Late Jurassic>Middle Jurassic>Late Permian>Early Carboniferous>Middle Carboniferous>Late Carboniferous>Early Permian; It was also noted that the arsenic contents decrease in the order: Subbituminous>Anthracite>Bituminous. However, compared with the geological characteristics of coal forming region, coal rank and coal-forming period have little effect on the concentration of arsenic in Chinese coal. The average arsenic concentration of Chinese coal is lower than that of the whole world. The health problems in China derived from in coal (arsenism) are due largely to poor local life-style practices in cooking and home heating with coal rather than to high arsenic contents in the coal.

Distribution, Enrichment and Modes of Occurrence of Arsenic in Chinese Coals

Arsenic is one of the toxic trace elements in coals, which is harmful to both the ecological environment and human health. Based on published literature and the data obtained by our research group, a total of 5314 As concentrations of Chinese coals were analyzed. The arithmetic mean of arsenic content in Chinese coals is 6.97 mg/kg. Choosing the percentage of provincial coal resources in nation...

Distributions of arsenic and selenium in selected Chinese coal mines.

The contents of arsenic and selenium in 33 coals collected from the main coal mines in northeastern, northern and eastern China were determined by flow injection-hydride generation and non-dispersion atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HGAFS). The concentrations of As in the northeast region are relatively higher with the values > 100 microg g(-1); in the east they are lower with values < 100 mic...

Phytoremediation of an arsenic-contaminated site using Pteris vittata L.: a two-year study.

A field study was conducted to determine the efficiency of Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata L.), an arsenic hyperaccumulator, on removal of arsenic from soil at an arsenic-contaminated site. Chinese brake ferns were planted on a site previously used to treat wood with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Arsenic concentrations in surface and profile soil samples were determined for 2000, 2001, an...

Arsenic leachability and speciation in fly ashes from coal fired power plants

To determine dominant factors on arsenic leaching from the coal fly ash, arsenic leaching test under a constant pH was performed. Twelve fly ash samples were collected from two coal fired power plants (600 MWe) having different boiler types. Arsenic in the raw coal was almost all associated with the fly ash in both power plants; however arsenic leaching fraction was strongly differed in boiler ...
